Haitian Sign Language: Navigating Deaf Culture & Education in Haiti
Join us on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 PM EST as we celebrate International Month of Creoles. Co-sponsored by NYU’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, this is the perfect time to reflect on the language advocacy work being done on the ground in Ayiti. This year #MotherTonguesUnited will be showcasing the language advocacy work being done with Haitian Sign Language (LSH). Join us in conversation with Sylvie Marc-Charles Weir and Jean Mary Hermann Colas, two LSH language advocates that have worked extensively with the deaf community in Haiti to produce the first comprehensive Haitian Sign Language Dictionary. The panelists will discuss their work providing teacher training workshops, creating curricula for deaf students, and advocating for the deaf community both in Haiti and its diasporic communities. The panel will take place in English & Haitian Creole with ASL interpretation. Facilitated by Wynnie Lamour-Quansah, Professor of Haitian Creole at NYU CLACS, the goal of #MotherTonguesUnited this year is to discuss and highlight the work being Haitian Sign Language (LSH) and the ways that different communities can gather to support this work.
This discussion will take place in English & Kreyòl Ayisyen with ASL interpretation.
The panel will be followed by where delicious Haitian food and drink will be served.
