Week 1: The Origins and History of Vodou
- Introduction to Vodou: Discover the origins of Vodou, its African roots, and its development in Haiti. Explore the syncretic nature of Vodou and how it has evolved through the blending of indigenous African beliefs, Catholicism, and Taíno influences.
- Historical Context: Examine the historical events that have shaped Vodou, including the impact of colonialism, slavery, and the Haitian Revolution. Understand how Vodou has played a role in Haiti’s history and identity.
- Key Terms: Learn about the central beliefs and practices of Vodou, including the concept of Bondye (the supreme deity), the role of spirits (Lwa), and the importance of ancestors in Vodou spirituality.
Week 2: Rituals, Songs, Dances, and other Spiritual Practices
- Rituals and Ceremonies: Gain insight into the rituals and ceremonies that are integral to Vodou practice. Explore the significance of drumming, dancing, and offerings in connecting with the Lwa and ancestors.
- Spiritual Tools and Symbols: Discover the tools and symbols used in Vodou rituals, such as vèvè (ritual drawings), altars, and sacred objects. Learn how these elements are employed to honor and communicate with the spiritual realm. Understand what colors, rhythms, dances, and other spiritual practices are associated with each spirit (Lwa). The focus will be on these spirits, among others: Legba, Èzili Freda, Èzili Dantò, Ogou Feray, Danbala & Ayida, and Kouzen Zaka.
Week 3: Vodou in Contemporary Culture and Practice
- Q&A and Reflection: Participate in a guided reflection and Q&A session to address any questions and discuss insights gained throughout the course. Share your own reflections and experiences related to Vodou and spirituality.
- Sharing of additional resources: Receive information that can help continue guiding both a personal and community practice. Discuss the role of Vodou in fostering community cohesion, personal spirituality, and social justice.
