So, what actually happens inside a Kreyòl classroom?

The answer might surprise you.

In our classes, learning Kreyòl is never just about memorizing words or sentence patterns. It’s a space where history, culture, community, and personal identity intersect. For many diaspora and heritage learners, stepping into the classroom is an intentional journey of filling in the gaps of what they didn’t get growing up, and finding the confidence to speak without fear.

To give you a glimpse of what that journey looks like, we’re spotlighting RJ, a Haitian writer and HCLI student.

Reconnecting with What Was Missing

Like many in the dyaspora, RJ knew that learning Kreyòl was about much more than just picking up a new skill—it was about reconnecting with heritage, memory, and roots.

In our Kreyòl pou Dyaspora class, lessons go beyond translations to explore the deeper story of the language itself. Students unpack the history of Kreyòl as a tool of resilience, demystify common misconceptions (like the idea that Kreyòl is “broken French”), and discover how West African linguistic traditions continue to shape its rhythm today.

For RJ, having a learning environment built on patience and cultural depth unlocked foundational knowledge that had previously felt out of reach.

From Hesitation to Bravery

One of the hardest parts of learning Kreyòl, especially as a heritage learner, is overcoming the fear of making mistakes or pronouncing words incorrectly.

Inside the HCLI classroom, that pressure melts away. Supported by a compassionate instructor and a cohort of peers who share similar experiences, RJ found that hesitation quickly turned into courage. Learning alongside others who understood the emotional weight of reconnecting with Kreyòl transformed the learning process into an empowering, joyful experience.
