This 14-hour course is designed for students primarily, but not limited to, of Haitian Heritage, with an interest in advancing their Haitian Creole studies. Prior to attending the course, students must already have a basic comprehension of the grammar structure, sounds, and vocabulary of Haitian Creole. Students will be guided through intensive oral practice with an emphasis on conversation and writing, with peer- and instructor-provided feedback. Students will be guided through all aspects of language learning, including: reading culturally relevant texts; fostering more advanced vocabulary acquisition; composing written materials; and actively improving listening skills.The course will be largely conducted in Haitian Creole to facilitate continued and increased consciousness of the language. Focus will be placed on dispelling myths about the language and issues of identity as they relate to language learning. Students must be prepared to review grammar structure and vocabulary on their own, in order to increase the value of their learning experience in the course. At the end of this course, students will be able to comfortably navigate a conversation in Kreyòl while engaging more fully in reading, writing, and listening skills. Several courses sessions will be supplemented by multimedia resources, online videos, and other culturally relevant materials online. Several course sessions may be pre-recorded.All relevant course materials will be provided by HCLI. Course will take place entirely online and a link will be sent out prior to the start of the session.
